WORKED EXAMPLE · QUARTER TORUS, 350 MM OUTER RADIUS
Composite draping example: torus section
A 2D woven fabric cutting pattern generated from a 3D torus section using DrapeCut's pin-jointed net draping simulation. Warp at 0°, locking angle 45° (a 2×2 twill), seed placed by the tool. The part is a quarter torus, 350 mm outer radius.
What this part shows
A torus carries both signs of curvature: the outer half is dome-like and the inner half is saddle-like. Seeded on the crown of the tube, the net shears one way going round the outside and the other way going round the inside, and the flat pattern is asymmetric about the seed as a result.
This is what a real duct, a wheel arch or a wing fillet looks like to the cloth, and it is why a single-ply pattern for such a part is rarely a tidy shape. Max shear reaches 30°, with 0 cells past the locking angle.
Open this example in DrapeCutChange the seed, the warp angle, the weave or the locking angle and the drape re-solves in well under a second. The DXF for an example downloads without an account.
How this page was made
The sample STL (23762 triangles) was draped by the same solver the tool runs, with these settings:
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Warp direction | 0° |
| Tow pitch | 10 mm (coarse, so the net is legible; real cloth is 1–5 mm) |
| Locking angle | 45° |
| Seed | 169.4, 168.6, 99.4 mm (suggested by the tool) |
| Cells in the ply | 1161 |
Shear angle is pitch-independent to within the mesh resolution; cloth area and the flat size are quantised to the pitch.
