MCP CONNECTION GUIDE
Cut composite patterns with your AI assistant
Connect DrapeCut to an assistant that supports MCP. Import a CAD surface, compare fibre directions, and download a DXF or a printable PDF. DrapeCut runs the geometry and draping calculations for you.
Free during beta. No DrapeCut sign-in or local solver installation required.
1. Connect your assistant
In your client's MCP settings, add a remote server named DrapeCut, choose Streamable HTTP, and enter the URL above. Your client must support custom remote MCP servers; availability and setup vary by client.
Codex CLI or IDE extension
In a terminal, register the hosted connection:
codex mcp add drapecut-hosted --url https://drapecut.com/mcp
Start a new session or restart the extension. For longer comparisons, set the tool timeout to 600 seconds in the same server's entry in ~/.codex/config.toml:
[mcp_servers.drapecut-hosted]
url = "https://drapecut.com/mcp"
tool_timeout_sec = 600
This is an alternative configuration for the same connection; merge it into an existing entry rather than duplicating the table. See the official Codex MCP configuration guide.
2. Try a sample
Ask your assistant:
Create a DrapeCut workspace and load the dome sample. Compare carbon twill 3k at 0°, 15°, 30° and 45°, using the same seed. Show coverage, maximum shear, the percentage past locking and self-overlap.
The assistant can discover the available tools, fabric presets and sample parts. It receives compact result statistics, then you can choose which pattern to export:
Export the chosen result as DXF and as an A4 PDF. Give me the download links.
Download the DXF for your cutting software, or print the PDF at 100% scale. PDF patterns are tiled across sheets at 1:1; check the printed ruler before cutting.
3. Use your own part
- Ask for an upload link. “Create a DrapeCut workspace and give me its upload link.”
- Open the link and choose your file. STEP/STP, STL and OBJ files are accepted, up to 40 MiB. The model should use millimetres.
- Tell the assistant the upload is finished. Ask it to list the uploaded files and import the one you chose.
- For STEP, choose the faces to cover. The assistant lists face areas, bounds, centres and neighbouring faces. Specify the intended faces; a whole solid is not automatically the ply surface.
- Compare and export. Keep the seed and cloth fixed when comparing fibre angles. Review coverage, locking and overlap together, then request your DXF or PDF download.
The hosted server cannot read a path on your computer. A file attached to an unrelated chat is not automatically available to DrapeCut; use the workspace upload link. If face descriptions do not identify the intended surface clearly, inspect your CAD model or use the browser tool for visual selection.

Comparisons try up to 12 requested angles at a fixed seed and rank them by coverage, then percentage past lock, then maximum shear. This compares your chosen candidates; it does not find a global optimum. Distances and pitch use millimetres, areas use mm², and angles use degrees.
Workspaces, files and privacy
A hosted workspace lasts up to two hours and may end earlier if the service restarts. Download any patterns you want to keep before it expires. Workspace IDs, upload links and download links grant access to the associated work: share them only with people who should have that access.
Uploaded CAD files and exported patterns use temporary server storage. Expired workspace files are cleaned up automatically; active uploads and downloads can finish first. Workspaces are not saved to your website account.
DrapeCut records usage to improve the beta, including tool outcomes and timings, client IP addresses, file names, settings, result statistics and small pattern previews. Activity records are kept for 90 days by default. Tool telemetry excludes raw tool arguments, workspace access tokens and credentials, and there is no separate third-party analytics destination. Your assistant provider has its own handling of your conversation and tool results.
The model predicts a kinematic drape of cloth over a surface. It does not model friction, tow stiffness or ply interaction, and it does not assess structural strength. Review the pattern and the shear and locking results before using it.
Prefer files directly from your computer?
The local stdio adapter can import from an allowed folder and save patterns into drapecut-output/. It uses the same hosted solver and requires a small Python environment. Users with a source checkout can follow docs/mcp.md for setup.
